Finding Inspiration Without Copying
Look Beyond Design
The best design inspiration comes from places that aren't specifically about design. Nature, architecture, fashion, literature—these fields solve problems in creative ways that can translate to your work.
Study the Fundamentals
When you see something you love, don't just admire it. Deconstruct it. Why does it work? What principles from color theory, typography, or composition are at play?
Keep a Swipe File
Collect work that inspires you. But be intentional. When you add something, write down why you're saving it. This trains your eye and helps you identify what resonates with you personally.
Develop Your Style
Constraints breed creativity. When you work within limitations—a small color palette, two typefaces, a specific grid—you're forced to innovate. Your personal style emerges from the choices you make within these boundaries.
The Copying Trap
It's easy to copy. It's hard to create. But the effort is worth it. When you solve problems yourself, the solution is stronger because it's rooted in your unique perspective.
